Methodology
How we rank the world's courses
The assessment of a golf course is, inevitably, a matter of judgement. Even among those with exceptional knowledge and experience of the game, opinions of the same eighteen holes may differ.
Our rankings are therefore informed by the collective judgement of an accomplished panel of amateurs, PGA Professionals and golf course architects, each bringing a distinctive perspective to the assessment. No single viewpoint defines a rating; rather, each published score reflects the considered consensus of the panel and the breadth of expertise it represents. All visits are conducted unannounced, with judges experiencing each course as they would any other day of play. This allows us to assess not only the character and quality of the course, but also the standards of presentation, conditioning and management maintained in the ordinary course of business.
Each course is assessed across six carefully considered categories, weighted according to their contribution to the overall golfing experience. These assessments are combined to produce a score out of 100, representing the considered view of the judging panel.
